Endless Summer

We love the Olympics!

We learn about the athletes, who they are, where they are from. We invent our own Olympic "sports" right here in the living room. We commission works of "art" in honor of these great games. And at the same time,  we are glued to the T.V. to watch as many events as possible.

My national pride and patriotism shine during these events. Of course, the U.S. always has a great showing. We are also cheering for Spain, especially the athletes from Catalunya. We´ve cheered on the gymnasts and the track & field athletes,  the swimmers,  etc. We especially enjoy the basketball and are hoping that there will be a re-match between the U.S. and Spain.

As I watch, I am always amazed by the talent, the strength, the speed, the grace, and the determination of the young athletes who show up. I am especially in awe this year by those female athletes who have come from countries where women were formerly prohibited from participating. These are true heroes. I also wonder how the games themselves are interpreted by the various cultures represented.

In addition, this summer it´s been a chance to teach Aaron more about where we live and where to find it on a map.
While listening to the 2012 Olympic Games Soundtrack on Spotify, we used some helpful props...the "Cars" cars which go everywhere with us. Since he knows that the blue car is from France and the yellow car is from Spain, etc. I thought I´d try out linking the shape of the country with the cars he knows and loves so well.
So, it worked! After practicing a few times he could identify Spain and France and Germany and England and the United States and Africa on the map.

When the time comes for the Closing Ceremony, I will be sad and sluggish for a few days...then, eventually things should return to normal around here. But you better believe that we already have our calendars marked for the 2016 Olmpics in Brazil. Wherever we are, we´ll be ready to watch, to cheer, to learn more the next time around.
